Film mixing brings the soundtrack into focus. Dialogue, sound design, atmospheres, effects and music are balanced as a whole, with attention to the story, the rhythm of the image and the audience’s perspective.
At Konken Studios in Hamburg, the large cinema-grade mixing stage provides the space to judge these relationships across a complete film. The work includes cinema, documentary and television productions, with the mix shaped around the specific film rather than a single fixed treatment.
dialogue
The relationship between a voice and its surroundings can establish intimacy, distance or tension. Dialogue is heard with the atmosphere, action and music so that balance serves the scene and its perspective.
atmosphere and effects
Atmospheres and effects contribute to depth, scale and movement. Their dynamics and relationship to the image are considered across quiet passages, transitions and larger cinematic moments.
music
Music, voice and effects share the same soundtrack. Their balance can bring a detail forward or allow space for a scene to breathe. Decisions are evaluated within the complete sequence, not only as isolated tracks.
working together
Before the mix, the current picture version, sound editing status and available music are reviewed. A clear exchange about the schedule, intended use and required delivery helps define the work. File formats and organisation should be agreed before transfer.
During mixing, individual elements are heard together. Balance, dynamics and perspective develop through the scenes and transitions. Listening with the filmmakers creates a shared basis for decisions about what should lead, support or recede.
Reviewing the complete film helps test continuity and the relationships between sequences. The required versions and delivery specifications are agreed for the particular production; they are not assumed to be identical for cinema, television and other uses.

The final mix combines the prepared dialogue, atmospheres, effects and music into a coherent soundtrack. It shapes how these elements relate in level, dynamics, space and time.
Editing prepares the material and its structure; mixing evaluates and balances the elements together. A conversation about the editing status helps identify the preparation needed before a mixing session.
The picture version, available dialogue and sound-design material, music status, schedule and intended use should be clarified. Audio exchange formats and delivery requirements are confirmed for the project before material is transferred.
